In episode 29 of the summer series on the Skiing is Believing podcast, Matt and Alan welcomed former Stifel US Ski team member Andrew Weibrecht.
Firstly, Andrew addressed his opinion concerning the lack of growth of alpine ski racing in the United States, potentially due to parents not allowing their children to express themselves in sporting activities. He said he believes kids are thrown into competition when they should be allowed to enjoy the journey and have fun in the sport. He also relates his observation to how it has impacted the way he has engaged with his own children when it comes to sports.
When reflecting on his career, he highlighted the incredible support from his American teammates during races. Athletes like Bode Miller and Daron Rahlves played a significant role in helping Andrew thrive in major competitions.
Andrew explained how one medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics changed his life. The world watched as he was able to deliver on the biggest stage, winning bronze in the super-g. This was a feat he was able to replicate at the 2014 Games in Sochi, achieving two medals, including a silver in the same discipline. That year, he unfortunately did not accomplish a World Cup podium or victory but continued to produce results on the World Cup circuit.
The following season, he delivered his first World Cup podium in Beaver Creek, and Andrew shared what a result like that at home truly means.
Weibrecht also told Matt and Alan what it took to accept retirement.
Finally, tune in to find out who Andrew’s best friend in ski racing is! Just a hint: you may be able to guess based on their annual ski camps together.
