While the German alpine women’s team started training Wednesday (May 14) on the glacier in Kaunertal, Austria, the men traveled southwards to the Mediterranean island of Cyprus this week for their first conditioning camp. The glacier training for the ladies follows a conditioning camp held earlier in Sardinia.

“The conditions were very good and we are satisfied with the start of the preseason,” said women’s team coach Markus Anwander. The team has moved onto a speed training focus. “After skiing the first few days, the ladies have recently moved on long skis to strengthen all-round qualities,” he added.

Meanwhile, the men’s team, led by new head coach Mathias Berthold, has come together following individual training for a team conditioning camp in Cyprus.

“While we all know that a hard and intensive training week is ahead of us, the early summer weather in the Mediterranean setting is ideal to work on the basics in the field of strength and endurance,” said Felix Neureuther.

Located on the Eastern part of the island, Club Aldiana where the team is staying is an ideal starting point for daily, extended bike trips and has all the amenities for additional strength and coordination work.

“We have the ideal conditions to prepare intensively for the World Cup winter,” remarked Berthold. “Weather and topography of the island are perfect and the team can complete an extensive workload.”
