Up until now, summer training for the German alpine teams has taken place on the European glaciers: the Stilfser Joch, Saas-fee and Moelltaler glacier offered excellent training conditions but the assorted teams are still heading overseas in mid-August.

The German men’s technical team is off to Ushuaia, Argentina, but missing from coach Albert Doppelhofer’s group will be superstar Felix Neureuther. Fritz Dopfer, Stefan Luitz, Alexander Schmidt, Dominik Stehle, Linus Strasser and Dominik Schwaiger depart for Ushuaia Aug. 16 while Neureuther will stay in Europe to train both individually and also on snow with the Europa Cup team.

“I am feeling good right now. Slowly but surely and with a large training effort, my back is stabilizing but a three-week trip overseas does not make sense at the moment,” explained Neureuther. “I am planning some snow days together with the Europa Cup team in Saas-Fee next to my regular training.”

The men’s downhill team is also heading overseas: Klaus and Christof Brandner, Thomas Dreßen, Josef Ferstl, Heiner Lengst, Max Maas, Manuel Schmid and Andreas Sander will spend two weeks in La Parva, Chile, before the team changes ski resorts and heads to Valle Nevado.

“Next to the training session we are planning to take part in the FIS races in South America to give the younger athletes the chance to gain some FIS points,” said discipline coach Christian Schwaiger.

The ladies’ speed team is also journeying to Chile but will make their base in Chillan. Viktoria Rebensburg, Patrizia Dorsch, Simona Hoesl, Ann-Katrin Magg, Ronja Mayr, Kira Weidle and Michaela Wenig will train in Chile through Sep. 8. The training camp comes too soon for Veronique Hronek, who suffered a torn ACL at the 2015 World Championships in Vail-Beaver Creek. She will join the second training group in their preparations on the European glaciers and hopefully return to the first group later in September.

The ladies’ technical team will stick to Europe and hold most of their training sessions in Saas-Fee. Discipline coach Robert Krumbacher has scheduled three blocks of six training days in this period of intensive training for the group including Christina Geiger, Lena Duerr, and Jessica Hilzinger.
