BORMIO, Italy (AP) — A men’s World Cup super-G began in dramatic fashion Sunday when the first skier, Switzerland’s Gino Caviezel, crashed heavily on the Stelvio slope, which will host events at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Caviezel became the third skier airlifted to a hospital from the Stelvio this weekend. The Swiss Ski Federation said the 32-year-old sustained a dislocated shoulder, which was reset, and a complex knee injury requiring further evaluation. Caviezel hit a gate and tumbled roughly 45 seconds into his run. He was conscious but pointed to his knee as medics arrived.
The race, eventually won by Fredrik Moeller, was delayed for nearly 20 minutes while Caviezel received treatment and was airlifted back to Switzerland by Swiss Air Rescue.
Two other skiers, Frenchman Cyprien Sarrazin and Italian Pietro Zazzi, were flown off the slope after crashes during downhill training on Friday. Sarrazin underwent surgery to address a brain bleed, while Zazzi required an operation on his leg.
The string of incidents has raised safety concerns ahead of future races on the Stelvio.
