The same week the World Cup races wrapped up in Meribel, France, and the best skiers in the world were battling one last time for the prestigious crystal globes, the last races of the Europa Cup and Far East Continental Cup circuits were taking place in Andorra and Russia.

While topping the standings at the end of the World Cup season brings athletes plenty of prestige and a beautiful crystal globe, finishing in the top three in the Europa Cup rankings comes with a sought-after award – a fixed World Cup starting place for next season.

Europa Cup

After 31 races held for the ladies and 33 for the men, Austrian Ricarda Haaser and Italian Riccardo Tonetti earned the Europa Cup overall victories, with 793 and 645 points respectively. Haaser finished 215 points ahead of second-ranked Ylva Staalnacke of Sweden and 236 points ahead of third-ranked Jasmine Flury of Switzerland. Tonetti’s victory was slightly less dominant yet he still won with an impressive 90 point-margin ahead of Austrian Thomas Mayrpeter and 114 points more than Roland Leitinger who finished second and third.

In downhill, the Austrian team heavily dominated the men’s rankings as they earned the top five spots in the discipline. On the ladies’ side two of the tree podium spots were claimed by Austrians, Ramona Siebenhofer was the best downhill skier of 2014-15 followed by teammate Tamara Tippler and Flury who finished tied in second place, nine points behind the winner.

Flury showed she might soon be one to watch in the World Cup speed disciplines as she also claimed a second-place season result in super G, finishing behind French Romane Miradoli who won the title. On the men’s side, Austria dominated the super G as well, with Patrick Schweiger and Thomas Mayrpeter claiming the top two positions and four of their teammates placing in the top 10.

Overall winners Haaser and Tonetti also claimed the giant slalom and slalom titles, respectively, while the most successful skier in the ladies’ slalom races and men’s giant slalom standings were Austrians Lisa-Maria Zeller and Roland Leitinger.

Far East

After 18 races, this year’s Far East Cup concluded in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia, with a clear domination exerted once again by the Japanese skiers. On the ladies side, Emi Hasegawa won the overall title while her teammates claimed the next five spots. Hasegawa also won the slalom title and finished second, behind Makiko Arai, in the giant slalom.

On the men’s side, Hideyuki Narita won the overall, the giant slalom and the super G titles. The slalom title this year went to Kyosuke Kono, who won ahead of Slovene Matic Skube and Korean Sung-hyun Kyung.
