XCold Powder to Prevent Base Burn

Hey! I’m Mia Hunt, a Toko athlete. Brrr, it’s been cold in Colorado lately, so I want to share one of my favorite Toko waxing products—XCold Powder—for use in frigid conditions. It protects your ski bases from burning on cold, dry snow, especially when you’re taking multiple training runs. It’s easy to incorporate into your waxing routine and can help your skis last longer. Waxing with powder might be new to some people, so I’m sharing how I use it.

Why Use XCold Powder?

XCold Powder works best in extremely cold and dry conditions where you’re slipping and taking lots of runs. If you’re unfamiliar, base burn refers to the white discoloration that sometimes appears near your ski edges after a cold day of skiing. Base burn slows your skis significantly. Fortunately, you can minimize or even prevent base burn with a few steps in the wax room before heading out on a freezing day.

My Step-by-Step Waxing Process

Here’s my process: I start by brushing the bases with either a steel wire brush or a copper brush to remove grime. Then, I rub a layer of hot wax into the base without heat, creating a thin protective layer before I use the iron. Next, I add XCold Powder. I pour a line of powder along each edge underfoot—about the length of my bindings—since this area is most prone to base burn. Afterward, I drip hot wax as usual and iron everything into the ski. Once the skis cool, I scrape and brush until the bases are shiny. Then, they’re ready for training or racing.

Be Ready for the Cold

It’s comforting to know your skis have extra protection for those extremely cold days. Stay warm out there!
