International Roundup: The Bode Show, NorAms, Hoffmann and Defago
In Beaver Creek last week, Bode Miller officially launched his new radio show on SIRIUS, a satellite radio provider which delivers commercial-free music and sports programming to cars and homes. Miller’s show will air every Thursday night at 9pm ET. Miller’s show will appear on SIRIUS Faction the channel SIRIUS created especially for action sports enthusiasts.
On The Bode Show, Miller will take listeners along as he, his friends and other racers talk about their experiences on and off the alpine circuit. At Beaver Creek, Miller had Erik Schlopy and Marco Sullivan sitting near the microphone with him for a special broadcast of the show. Bode will talk about and play his music he likes Guns and Roses. Starting December 9th, the show will air on SIRIUS Faction, channel 28, every Thursday at 9pm ET.
Bode says, “I’m psyched to get out with SIRIUS in front of ski and music fans — to have a little party and talk some skiing and play some tunes.’ Miller joins skateboarding legend Tony Hawk, world champion surfer Kelly Slater, Olympic beach volleyball gold medalist Kerri Walsh, and professional skateboarder/and host of Viva La Bam Bam Margera as a host on SIRIUS Faction. Champion cyclists Lance Armstrong and volleyball legend Sinjin Smith will debut with their own shows on SIRIUS Faction soon, according to a SERIUS press release.
‘Bode Miller is redefining the world of skiing with his charisma and athletic achievements’ said Scott Greenstein, SIRIUS President of Entertainment and Sports. ‘Bode will treat his fans to an entertaining and fun weekly show that will also provide an inside view to his world of accomplishments.’

NorAms in Beaver Creek and Lake Louise
As the World Cup circus moved out of Beaver Creek, the second-tier moved in for two NorAm giant slaloms on the Birds of Prey piste. Chip Knight and Tom Rothrock were the race winners, with strong performances on both days by Jimmy Cochran. Meanwhile, up in Lake Louise, the CIBC Coupe NorAm Cup was kicked into gear for the first of two women’s Super G races. Held on the same track as the Lake Louise Winterstart World Cup, which came to an end last Sunday, the women’s NorAm Cup featured 66 racers from around the world. American Stacey Cook a columnist at skiracing.com blazed down the course with a time of 1:14:40 to claim gold. Canadian Alpine Ski Team members Sherry Lawrence was second, with a time of 1:15:76 and Christina Risler was third with a time of 1:16:09.
Hoffman said to be out for up to six weeks
Ambrosi Hoffmann, the 27-year-old speed racer from Switzerland, hurt the medial-collateral ligament in his left knee at Beaver Creek last week. Now back in his home nation, Hoffmann has seen a doctor who determined that the cartilage, meniscus and ACL are intact. Hoffman will be back on snow in January, according to a press release circulated by his team.
Defago the Younger retires from the sport
Daniel Defago, a member of the B team for Switzerland, retired last week. The younger brother of Didier Defago injured his knee in a giant slalom at Zermatt back in December of 2002; the damage was persistent, and the 24-year-old Defago would have required even more surgery in the middle of the present season. ‘Unfortunately, the lesions of the cartilage proved so severe that they do not allow more competition’ explained a Swiss ski team release. Defago won the slalom at World Junior Championships, in Canada in 2000.
American women out-scored the men last week
Last week’s four-event World Cup at Beaver Creek was a huge success, with dramatic racing, no major injuries and twice the number of credentialed media in place, according the president of Vail Valley Foundation, which hosted the race. But for all the hype surrounding the American men’s team performances including that generated by this website one significant fact got overlooked: in four races, the American men garnered 392 World Cup points, slightly less than what the American women got in simultaneous races in Lake Louise. They had 426 points, in only three races.
