Italian Skiing Community Mourns Loss of Young Talent Matilde Lorenzi
The alpine skiing community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 19-year-old Italian skier Matilde Lorenzi, who passed away following a training accident in northern Italy. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) confirmed her death on Tuesday, expressing condolences: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Matilde Lorenzi.”
Lorenzi, a promising talent and a member of the Italian Army sports division, suffered a severe head injury during training on the Schnalstaler glacier in Val Senales on Monday. She fell heavily on the hard piste and received immediate first aid. First responders airlifted her to a hospital in Bolzano. Medical staff described her condition as “very serious,” and, despite all efforts, Lorenzi succumbed to her injuries early Tuesday morning. Training stopped immediately after her accident.
A rising star in Italian skiing, Lorenzi recently captured the national Super-G title in March, marking her as a standout athlete with a bright future. Her passing comes just weeks before what would have been her 20th birthday on November 15.
In remembering Lorenzi, FIS joins FISI President Flavio Roda, her family, teammates, coaches, and the wider Italian skiing community in honoring her life and achievements. All who knew her will deeply miss her dedication, spirit, and talent, and the skiing world mourns the loss of a talented young athlete taken far too soon.
