J3 Rocky/Central: Byrne, McDonald win downhills

Ski and Snowboard Club Vail’s Greta Byrne topped the women’s downhill, while Team Summit’s Conor McDonald topped the men’s race Tuesday at the J3 Rocky/Central Junior Olympics at Vail.

Ski and Snowboard Club Vail’s Greta Byrne topped the women’s downhill, while Team Summit’s Conor McDonald topped the men’s race Tuesday at the J3 Rocky/Central Junior Olympics at Vail.
Byrne took advantage of a fast track to finish with a time of 46.58 seconds. Second place went to Katharine Ryan of Aspen Valley Ski/Snowboard Club. Ryan finished 0.11 seconds behind with a time of 46.69.  In third, from Minnesota’s Buck Hill Ski Team, was Paula Moltzan. Moltzan finished with a 47.08.
McDonald clocked 46.31 to lead the boys. In second, just 0.06 seconds back, was Sean McCormick of Ski and Snowboard Club Vail. Mick Osmundson from Crested Butte Academy took third in 46.43.
Ski and Snowboard Club Vail has done a fantastic job preparing the downhill track. The race venue has been prepared like a World Cup venue,” said RMD Competition and Development Manager Darlene Nolting. “The downhill track on Golden Peak has everything a world-class downhill should have.  Flats for grabbing the bullet and letting the skis run, steeps to increase speed, fast turns that are perfect for tucking and trying to keep the arc and a couple of jumps that will make the heart beat a little bit faster.  The athletes are loving it and have a great time here in Vail, Colorado.”
The J3 Rocky/Central Junior Olympic action continues Tuesday with a super G for both the men and women.
