Even when the sun shines in Santa Caterina, it doesn’t seem to touch the race slope. The challenging Deborah Compagnoni course is plagued by shadows, making it tough for racers to see the bumps in the darkness. Blue dye lines are the athletes’ guiding light, and the actual lights, which you’d generally see for a night race, stayed on throughout the day.

Tuesday marked the first time that the venue had hosted a World Cup super-G, and Kjetil Jansrud continued his winning streak with a final time of 1:30.88. The Norwegian is only the second man ever to win the first three super-G races of the season after Austrian Hermann Maier during the 1999-2000 season.

“I’m feeling awesome,” he said. “There’s not much to say. You never expect the wins. In some ways, I’m skiing very confidently this whole season, but also these last races…I’m just enjoying the flow for the moment and hopefully, it’ll continue.”

Austrian Hannes Reichelt and Italian Dominik Paris could not catch the winner, ending the day in second and third place. Reichelt, who was 0.60 seconds off the winning pace, said he is finally getting his confidence after his crash at Kitzbuehel last year.

“Last year, 2016, was not so easy for me,” he explained. “After my podium in Kitzbuehel, I had the crash. Then in summertime, I had surgery, so coming back was not easy.”

The Austrian hopes to carry his flow into 2017 including World Championships in St. Moritz this February. For Paris, it was a podium in front of a home crowd, made possible — in part — thanks to great skiing and a few days of training on the slope before the race.

“It’s feeling very good,” the Italian said with a huge grin. “It’s so good to stand on the podium at home…a lot of emotions.”

Eight Americans pushed out of the start gate on Tuesday, led by Travis Ganong, who started bib 2. It seems that these guys thrive in the dark. #AmericanVampires, anyone? Thomas Biesemeyer had a career-best result, coming in eighth place from bib 45.

“All in all, I’m really proud of my race today,” Biesemeyer said. “Since the start of the year, I haven’t really connected my training to racing, and today, I felt like I moved in that direction,”

Behind him in 12th place was Andrew Weibrecht, whose wife and daughter were in the audience to cheer him on. Bryce Bennett made a 40-spot jump to finish in 20th place. Ganong and Jared Goldberg grabbed top-30 results as well, ending the day in 24th and 30th, respectively. Ryan Cochran-Siegle finished in 33rd while Brennan Rubie and Steven Nyman did not finish.

The men race downhill tomorrow on the slope after only one training run, which took place on Monday.
