Opening Ceremonies were held in downtown Morzine, France.

The 43rd FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships kicked off on January 29 with the opening ceremonies in Morzine, France, in the Haute Savoie region. Morzine is one of five resorts in Portes du Soleil hosting the event, which will wrap on February 3 with the women’s giant slalom and the men’s slalom.

During the opening ceremonies, each country’s flag flashed up on a big screen as teams from 54 nations were welcomed. The FIS flag was passed from delegates from St. Anton, Austria, site of the 2023 event, to the French delegates. In addition to welcoming remarks from Martial Saddier, President of the Departmental Council of Haute-Savoie, the highlight of the opening ceremonies was, without a doubt, a massive bald eagle swooping just above the crowd on its way to and from the stage.

During the week, events will be held at Châtel, Morzine, Les Gets, Saint Jean d’Aulps, and Avioraz.

The weeklong competition features six alpine disciplines: downhill, super-g, mixed team event (aka, the parallel team event), slalom, and giant slalom, as well as the newly launched team alpine combined event, where two racers pair up (by gender) to compete as a team—one racing in Super G and one in slalom). In Portes du Soleil, this team event will be held across mountains, with the super-g staged in Châtel, while the slalom will be run in nearby Morzine.

Here’s the lineup of U.S. ski racers who qualified for this prestigious event, which brings together the best under-21 ski racers on the planet.
