Alexis Pinturault became the first French ski racer to ever win a World Juniors giant slalom race today at the 2009 FIS Junior World Ski Championships in Garmisch Partenkirchen, Germany. It was the 17-year-old’s first World Juniors podium.

Austrians Bjoern Sieber and Marcel Hirscher joined Pinturault on the podium in second and third, respectively. It was Seiber’s second trip to a Junior Worlds podium after winning a bronze in the super G last year in Formigal, Spain. Hirscher, a regular top-ten finisher on the World Cup over the last two years, made his sixth trip to a World Juniors medal.

The top American was Nolan Kasper in eighth place. Teammates Tommy Biesemeyer (14th) and Michael Ankeny (28th) also cracked the top 30.

The women were also in action today, training on the downhill course. German Isabelie Stiepel had the fastest time at 1:20.21. Half a second back was Norway’s Lotte Smiseth Sejersted. American Alice McKennis had the fourth fastest time of the day. The Rowmark Ski Academy product won two Nor-Am downhills in mid-December at Lake Louise, Canada. The women’s downhill race is scheduled for Saturday, March 7.

“It was quite a battle today. The weather conditions were pretty difficult with those banks of fog floating in the middle part of the course this afternoon but I didn’t care too much. I managed to keep the pedal down also in the second run,” said Pinturault. “I knew I had to charge again to stay ahead of the two Austrians, but I don’t mind pressure at all, ski racing is fun for me.”

The race was run on the famous ‘Kandahar’ slope, known for its challenging terrain. “I have no problem remaining calm, very concentrated and fully determined when it matters. This demanding slope inspired me a lot. I like it when you have to take risks and use your brain to ski fast,” said Pinturault.

A podium finish is always pleasant whatever race you enter,” he said. “I have competed in a lot of big races this winter and it was not easy to be as focused today as last year in Spain. It was anyway a good test for me on that slope and I’m hoping for a good slalom tomorrow.”
