Junior Worlds: Rebensburg gets a second gold medal

German Viktoria Rebensburg collected her second gold medal of the 2009 World Junior Ski Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany Wednesday by thrashing an Austrian super G squad that pushed three skiers into the top four.

Rebensburg added the super G gold to the one she earned in GS two days ago topping Mariella Voglreiter by nearly a full second in an artful run down the hastily relocated course.

Four time gold medallist from previous world junior title meets Anna Fenninger added the bronze for her first medal of the 2009 event. A third Austrian, Ramona Siebenhofer was fourth.

Alice McKennis got the top placing for the U.S. in 12th place. Canadian Marie-Michele Gagnon posted 24th with teammate Georgia Simmerling 38th and Americans Rose Caston 39th.

Canadians Kate Ryley and Erin Mielzynski got 43rd and 44th respectively with U.S. skier Angel Collinson 45th.

“I was so relaxed after my great giant slalom win from Monday that I no problem taking great risks today and giving my all along this difficult course,” Rebensburg said. “I had nothing to lose today and this certainly helped. … I didn’t expect to be so fast again and win another gold medal in front of the other favorites.”

Vogelreiter said she was “totally happy, getting a medal at my first FIS Junior Worlds is pretty cool.” She added, “It is a very challenging course and many seemed to have a hard time figuring it out.”

For Fenninger, who has spent all year on the World Cup circuit, said she was happy to be back among her age peers. “It is surely nice to race again among the juniors, I have so many good friends there. It’s more relaxed than on the World Cup and it is a fun event.”

She said she had performed at her optimum but said the conditions were difficult and the course was “bumpy.”

With the bumping back of the men’s downhill due to fog from Tuesday to Wednesday the women’s super G was moved to the GS hill.

Swiss Lara Gut, the winner of a World Cup super G earlier this season and a double silver medalist at the World Ski Championships in February, missed a gate and was disqualified.
