Nolan KasperThe U.S. men’s Europa Cup squad continues to dazzle, pushing four men into the top 15 of a GS at Zuoz, Switzerland Tuesday and following up with Nolan Kasper capturing the slalom victory Wednesday (Jan. 19).

The win puts Kasper firsts in the Europa Cup slalom standings 260-244 over Swede Jens Byggmark.

Europa Cup overall and GS standings leader Alexis Pinturault got his third straight GS win at Zuoz, nine tenths of a second ahead of French teammate Cyprien Richard, the winner of the Adelboden World Cup GS just ten days prior. Pinturault is 19, Richard 32.

Swiss racer Justin Murisier, 18, got third just five hundreths behind Richard. Two Americans bunched into the top five with Tommy Ford in fourth and Kasper fifth. In addition Tim Jitloff was 14th and Warner Nickerson 15th. David Chodounsky placed 22nd and Colby Granstrom 25th on the day.

Kasper powered his way to the slalom win in impressive fashion .83 of a second ahead of Marc Gini. The Swiss skier has an EC slalom win from earlier this season and has made four World Cup slalom starts this season, making the top 10 at Levi.

Reto Schmidiger of Switzerland was third and Pinturault fourth. A tough course took out most of the rest of the U.S. entry list with six skiing out in the  first run and one more in the second. The only finisher besides Kasper was Charlies Christianson in 25th. Zuoz marked Christianson’s first Europa Cup scoring experience and his third EC start, second of the season. – Hank McKee

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
