Kearney, Colas secure season titles as North Americans own moguls World Cup closer in Are
Five of six podium spots went to North American moguls skiers at the final World Cup singles competition of the season in Are, Sweden today (March 11) as American Hannah Kearney and Frenchman Guilbaut Colas sealed the overall titles.
Kearney, an Olympic gold medalist, took the women’s contest with a score of 26.33 for her seventh World Cup victory of the season. It is her second season title, the first came in 2009. Coming in second today and in the season standings was Canadian Jennifer Heil with her sixth World Cup podium of the season. American Heather McPhie finished third with 25.08 points and her first podium of the season.
Kearney has become the definition of consistency this season, winning all World Cup individual moguls events and two of the four dual moguls World Cups with three podium finishes. She has been on the podium in all but one event this season.
“That has been my goal all year long,” said Kearney about winning the World Cup moguls title for the second time. “It is really satisfying.”
Canadian women filled the rest of the top six spots as Kristi Richardson, Audrey Robichaud and Chloe Duford-Lapointe finished 4-5-6.
“I was pleased with my first run, but after hearing Jen Heil’s [of Canada] score, which was nice and high, I didn’t want to get complacent. So I skied aggressively,” said Kearney. “My jumps were not perfect. I left room for improvement there, but it was enough. I am really happy with the way I competed today.”
U.S. young guns Kayla Snyderman and Heidi Kloser also scored in 10th and 12th, respectively.
Canadian Olympic gold medalist Alexadre Bilodeau earned his third victory of the season with a 26.17-point score today. Colas finished second today with 25.80 points. The silver-medal performance was enough to give Colas 661 points on the season to beat second-ranked Mikael Kingsbury (third today) of Canada by 66 points.
“The moguls here are a bit bigger than we’ve seen all season, and they’re firm – like we ski in Quebec – I think that gave me an edge because I could really showcase my absorption technique,” said Bilodeau, who is sitting third to Colas and Kingsbury in the overall standings.
A total of six U.S. men were led into the points by Jeremy Cota in eight place with 23.83 points. David DiGravio, Joe Discoe and Sho Kashima landed in the top 15 in ninth, 12th and 15, respectively. Nate Roberts
(18th) and Jay Panther finished (25th) also landed in the top 25.
World Cup competition continues in Are tomorrow with men’s and women’s dual moguls contests.
