While it was dumping snow in the west and rain in the east, Winter Park, Colo. offered warm weather and hard snow to get off two great days of racing for both men and women on Feb. 18 and 19. With points as low as 7 for the men and 22 for the women, the University of Denver (DU) as well as CU Boulder brought their respective crews, giving the younger racers something to chase after.

On Feb. 18, Storm Klomhaus of DU came out with two winning slalom runs in the women’s race, followed by Emma Hall from Ski and Snowboard Club Vail in a close second, and Rosie Hust of Buck Hill in third.

Klomhaus remembered the first slalom course to be pretty straightforward.

“My position and technique were sound, but there wasn’t enough attack because I haven’t been finishing much lately,” she said. “Running 30th second run was prime because the snow had melted a bit and the girls in front of me packed it down great.”

Skiing for CU Boulder, David Ketterer won the slalom by a wide margin of 1.82 seconds, followed by DU’s Alex Leever in second and CU Boulder’s Max Luukko in third.

The giant slalom on Feb. 19 started off with some clouds, but ended up being just as perfect as the slalom. Klomhaus won both runs yet again in the women’s race, coming away with a total of four winning runs and two gold medals.

“I ran bib 3,” she shared. “It was pretty straight and quick, which isn’t really my thing, but I tried to pin it as best I could anyways. I grew up here at Winter Park, so its really awesome to come back here for some fun racing.”

Storm was followed by Kayo Denda of Japan in second, and Taylor Grauer from the University of New Mexico in third.

DU Pioneer Samuel Dupratt put down two stellar winning runs on the men’s side, followed by slalom victor Ketterer in second and Luukko in third.

“The weather was nice, the snow was great, the course was fun, fast and open, and I skied solid,” Dupratt recounted. “Second run was much straighter than the first, which was a good thing for me – it was easier to let my skis run.”

The RMISA athletes are competing in the RMISA Championships from Feb. 24-25.
