The top three of the World Cup night slalom at Flachau today (Dec. 21) were all within a tenth of a second. In races like these veteran Croate Ivica Kostelic shines and he lit up the snow, the ruts and the lights of Flachau for his second slalom win of the season.

Swede Andre Myhrer had been fifth after the first run but took a risky and wild, charging second run and put pressure on the first run front runners. He wound up second .07 behind Kostelic, the defending Cup slalom champ. Getting third was Italian Cristian DeVille, overjoyed with his second career podium, and second of the season, just .09 behind Kostelic.

Fourth was Felix Neureuther for Germany while the home standing Austrians had to be satisfied with Manfred Pranger (33) in fifth, Mario Matt (32) in ninth and Reinfried Herbst (33) in 11th, a slap in the face for those in the country calling for younger racers to get starts. Marcel Hirscher, (22) was a second run DNF.

Three Canadians and one American scored on the evening, with Julien Cousineau finishing 15th, Trevor White 27th and Brad Spence finishing 28th after hiking. Nolan Kasper finished 26th.

It was snowing, it was foggy and none of it bothered Kostelic. He was elegant particularly high on the course where ruts had build up on the steep opening pitch. He used his full array of skills in taming a course that had stung many racers trying to take a bit too much risk.

“I was so miserable after Alta Badia for losing tenths,” said Kostelic who had been fifth in that race held just two days earlier. “Some times you are up and sometimes down. Today I was up.”

About the Author: Hank McKee

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
