Kostelic takes first run lead in Flachau night race

Ivica Kostelic got first run honors on a snowy, rutting slalom course in the Flachau, Austria World Cup night race with a narrow .14 margin over Cristian DeVille and .15 over Manfred Pranger.

While it was not an easy course for any of the competitors it was even more difficult for the later start numbers as ruts developed. A few succeeded including Patrick Thaler who moved from 25th to eighth, Fritz Dopfer climbed from 26th to 12th and Lars Elton Myhre from 45th to 16th.

Nolan Kasper will get a second run from 1.86 seconds back with Canada flipping two competitors, Julien Cousineau in 22nd and Brad Spence 25th. Trevor White just missed the cut in 31st and Ted Ligety finished the first heat 34th for an early departure. Will Gregorak, Bode Miller and Jimmy Cochran were all victims of the first course.
