Lindsey Vonn Announces 2018/19 Season Will Be Her Last
At a recent event with Chase Ink in Manhattan, NY, Lindsey Vonn officially announced that the upcoming World Cup season will be her last.
During a Facebook Livestream of the event, Vonn took a question regarding her goals for the 2018/19 season responding:
“Well, this is going to be my last season. Definitely retiring after this year and there’s one record I still would love to break, and that Ingemar Stenmark’s record of 86 World Cup wins.”
Currently, Vonn is four wins short of breaking Stenmark’s run. If she is successful, she will have earned the most World Cup wins in the history of the sport, male or female.
Previously, rumors had been circulating around her potential return in the 2019/20 season if she failed to break the record, but today Vonn confirmed that even if she comes up short, she feels comfortable with retirement after this season.
“If I could break the record, that would be amazing. If I can’t, then it’s been a great ride and I’m still the most successful female, and I think that’s something to be really proud of. So we’ll have to see what happens this year I guess.”
According to NBC Sports, Vonn has recently averaged about seven wins per season, if healthy. Her the chance of her succeeding is high, especially since she plans to compete in as many Super-G and Downhill events as possible.
Her first race this year will take place at Lake Louise in Alberta during the first weekend of December, marking her first chance to draw closer to Stenmark and closer to her goal of finishing her career with a historic season.
