Lowell Whiteman offering room and board

An unsuccessful bid for the Toppolino Games trial competitions got the
folks at the Lowell Whiteman School at Steamboat Springs, Colo.,
thinking. Part of the bid had been the school’s ability to house, and
feed, a significant number of young athletes. After graduating 40
students last season the enrollment dropped, leaving unfilled dorm
rooms and an under used cafeteria.

The concept of filling those beds and seats with competitors, fully
fleshed out during the bid process, was kept alive and harsh economic
times created a way to implement the idea. The Lowell Whiteman School
has offered to house and feed athletes attending any Steamboat Springs
Winter Sports club competition at price  -$45 a night – roughly half
the cost of staying in motel or condo.

“We’ve got a floor of dormitory rooms plus a couple of teacher rooms
available,” says Whiteman spokesman Rob Worrell. “It just makes sense
to use them.”
