Mammoth Spring: Richardson on a roll

Apr 10, 2009

Kaylin Richardson is following through on her plan to rack up some FIS points this spring. The 2009 national downhill champion is also proving that speed skiing is not her only forte with another win today in a FIS spring series slalom race at Mammoth Mountain, Calif.

In a massive field of more than 100 racers – a few of them international – Richardson won with a two-run combined time of 1 minute, 33.98 seconds, edging Nor-Am force Katie Hitchcock (1:34.37) and university racer Hayley Jones (1:35.66).

Richardson is on a bit of streak these days. “Winning races is definitely fun,” Richardson said. “I definitely have been feeling good. I haven’t been doing much tech at all this year so it’s good to get some turns in. With each run I get a little more confident on my slalom skis.”

Richardson is on a bit of streak these days. Immediately following the U.S. Championships in Alyeska, Alaska, Richardson headed to Vail and Beaver Creek, Colo., to compete in slalom and giant slalom races – also part of the FIS spring series.

Amid blinding snow and wind, Richardson won one slalom at Beaver Creek on April 6, was second in the other on April 5 and made off with third in the April 4 GS at Vail.

The weather hasn’t favored the races in Mammoth so far, either. Richardson said the wind was blowing with intermittent snow all day Thursday.

Jennifer Vanwagner, 19, also had a good showing in Thursday’s slalom, taking fourth in 1:35.81, followed by Sweden’s Hedvig Spaengs (1:36.39) and U.S. junior Julia Ford (1:36.62), who put herself on the map with her consistent top showing in all disciplines at this year’s nationals.

The spring series at Mammoth continues through April 14 with men’s and women’s slalom, GS and super-G.

Thursday, April 9 women’s slalom results:
