Italian alpine skiing standout Marta Bassino fractured the tibial plateau in her left knee during training in Val Senales and will miss this weekend’s FIS Alpine World Cup opener in Sölden, Austria.
The Italian Ski Federation (FISI) announced the injury after medical evaluations in Milan. Bassino, 29, was training with the Italian women’s technical team on the glacier when she fell and suffered the fracture.
A cornerstone of Italy’s women’s team, Bassino won the giant slalom Crystal Globe in the 2020-21 season and has been a steady podium contender ever since. Her history with Sölden runs deep. She earned her first World Cup podium there in October 2016, finishing third behind Switzerland’s Lara Gut.
Her absence leaves a significant gap for Italy’s women’s team, especially with the 2026 Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo fast approaching. As one of Italy’s brightest hopes for Olympic success on home snow, Bassino’s recovery will be closely followed in the months ahead.
According to FISI, Bassino has started the recovery process and will undergo additional evaluations in the coming weeks to determine her rehabilitation timeline. Her return date remains uncertain, but the focus is on achieving a complete and stable recovery.
The women’s World Cup season opens Oct. 25 in Sölden, marking the traditional start of the alpine racing calendar.
