The Swiss team training in South America took another hit on the injury front Sep. 2 when World Cup speed and alpine combined athlete Mauro Caviezel fell in downhill training at Chillan, Chile, suffering a broken fibula.

Caviezel’s teammate Beat Feuz also departed Chile early after sustaining a partially torn tendon in his right leg that required surgery back home in Switzerland.

The prognosis for Caviezel is slightly more promising than Feuz who will miss several months of training. Medical examinations at the University Hospital Balgrist indicated that Caviezel will not need to undergo surgery on his broken fibula and can begin rehabilitation in a plaster cast.

Although Caviezel will miss several weeks of training, medical personnel is optimistic that his goal of rejoining his team on snow in the U.S. in early November is more realistic that originally believed.
