BEAVER CREEK, Colo. – Tina Maze skied another flawless run to lead the opening leg of the alpine combined at the FIS Ski World Championship, finishing 0.02 seconds ahead of Lara Gut. Anna Fenninger finished with the third fastest time, 0.26 seconds back.

Maze is seeking her second straight gold medal of these Championships and third overall. The Alpine combined should arguably be her strongest event. She already owns victories on the World Cup tour in both slalom and downhill, but will face a challenge from the Austrian contingent of slalom skiers. Nicole Hosp, Michaela Kirchgasser, and Kathrin Zettel all skied impressive downhill runs to remain within striking distance, finishing fourth at 0.90 seconds back, eighth at 1.33 seconds behind, and 11th at 1.75 seconds back, respectively.

Lindsey Vonn was the fastest American on the morning with the seventh fastest time, but sits 1.31 seconds behind and admitted on Friday that she has not trained slalom in over two years. Laurenne Ross finds herself in 10th going into the slalom run, Julia Mancuso 17th, and Jackie Wiles 18th.

The slalom run with begin at 2:15 p.m. MT.
