Dartmouth was skiing without their top athlete, Tanguy Nef, this weekend at the Williams Carnival. Still, the Big Green was  able to churn out their most successful weekend of the season, led in large part by the men’s team. Dartmouth’s alpine team combined for 517 points to win the Carnival. The University of Vermont followed, missing two top athletes themselves, with 439 points and the University of New Hampshire finished in third with 355 points.

Dartmouth began the weekend with a sweep of the men’s GS podium. Brian McLaughlin won the event with a combined time of 1:40.53. His teammates Tomas Woolson and Kalle Wagner finished in second and third, 0.57 seconds back and0.77 seconds back, respectively.

“It was kind of a tough start with just, not quite executing on race day. I think my skiing has been there, slalom has been back and forth but GS has definitely been there all year so it’s nice to execute and put two runs together,” McLaughlin said after his first win of the season.

Just three teams dominated the women’s race. The University of Vermont, Dartmouth and the University of New Hampshire took up every spot within the top ten.

Paula Moltzan won her fifth race of the season with a combined time of 1:42.29. Josefine Selvaag, a freshman at UVM took second place 0.58 seconds back and Foreste Peterson, from Dartmouth took third, 0.60 seconds back.

“I’m pretty happy with how I’m skiing. I keep not having the best first runs but I think that is that gives me the fire to rip second runs,” Moltzan said. Moltzan sat off of the podium after first run, 0.73 seconds back.

On day two, the slalom, ended with the same two athletes atop the men’s and women’s podium.

McLaughlin finished with a combined time of 1:52.36, followed by Erik Arvidsson, of Middlebury, in second place, 0.43 seconds back and Woolson finished in third place, 0.58 seconds back.

“It’s definitely a good time of year to start skiing well again and start racing well,” McLaughlin said of getting his best results with NCAA edging closer.

Moltzan, with her sixth win of the season complete her second carnival sweep of this season, this first was on her home hill at Stowe. Moltzan finished with a combined time of 2:05.75. Peterson finished in second place 0.44 seconds back and Genevieve Frigon, from the University of Hampshire finished in third place, 0.99 seconds back.

Dartmouth will enter the EISA Championships next weekend having won four out of five carnivals.
