Who is racing, when and how to watch the February 16th Méribel women’s World Championship GS
Tonight’s forecast in Méribel is calling for mostly clear skies. With an overnight freeze, expect Thursday’s race surface to be excellent. Notably, in a World Championships, as is the standard in the World Cup, they will flip the top 30 to create the second run start order. Uniquely after the top thirty has finished they will then also race the 31st-60th first-run finishers.
Women’s elite GS has provided some of the best ski racing entertainment of the season. However, it has been dominated by eight women. Nonetheless, when Mikaela Shiffrin is at her best, she is nearly unbeatable. Even so, this is a World Championships and surprise results are to be expected.
By earning five victories, Shiffrin has dominated this season’s GS racing. Still, including Shiffrin, eight women have stood on a 2022-23 GS podium. Notably, three other women, Lara Gut-Behrami, Marta Bassino, and Valérie Grenier, have also won.
Current season rank of the six North American women who are entered in the World Championship GS
The Alpine Canada Alpin team has two women starting tomorrow and the Stifel US Alpine Team has four. The North American women have won six of the eight women’s GS races this season. USA’s Mikaela Shiffrin has won five and Canada’s Valérie Grenier has won one. Notably, Paula Moltzan, who broke her hand winning gold in the mixed team parallel, will be starting. She is a ski racing warrior.
