HAFJELL, Norway – The U.S. Ski Team’s Paula Moltzan won her first major international event by racing to gold in the women’s slalom at the Junior World Championships in Norway. Germany’s Marlene Schmotz was 0.65 seconds back for silver and Austria’s Katharina Truppe collected bronze.

“I am really happy as I wasn’t expecting this at all. It’s a nice surprise! In the first run, I ran first and the conditions were just unreal,” the happy Junior World Champion said after the race. “It was a pretty tough competition. These girls are great skiers and it could have gone to anyone today. Perhaps it was just my day with a little bit of luck. AJ (Ginnis) and I were definitely feeding off of each other’s energy, it was awesome to watch him compete and just lay it down. And then I was like ‘OK, now it’s my turn.'”

It was Moltzan’s first big title on an international stage. The 20-year-old, who landed in fourth at the past Junior Worlds in Jasna, recently finished 20th in slalom at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Vail/Beaver Creek, Colo.

Local hero Henrik Kristoffersen beat the record of most Junior World Championship victories with his slalom win in the men’s race. A regular at Europa Cup races and the defending super G Junior World Champion Marco Schwarz of Austria was more than one and a half seconds back, good enough for silver. The U.S. Ski Team’s AJ Ginnis crossed the finish line with a 1.75-second margin and grabbed bronze. Teammate Erik Arvidsson finished 22nd, and Global Racing’s Jack Auty was 27th.

“The first run was sweet. Second run was pretty bumpy, so I’m super happy I could ski down and finish in third,” said Ginnis. “The morning was good for snow and the afternoon was like spring conditions. It was a pretty good day for the U.S.”

“I like to beat records and this is great! In a way it was already historic yesterday to tie with Benjamin but it’s even cooler to be the record holder now on the men’s side,” said Kristoffersen. “Success doesn’t come easy. There’s a lot of hard work involved.”

Born in 1994, it was the last showing of 20-year-old Kristoffersen at this level as he is no longer eligible to compete at Junior Worlds. “It’s been a great end to my junior career. Now, I have to become grown up, gain weight and even behave like a grown-up”, he joked.
