Who is skiing, when are they skiing and how to watch the 2023 women’s World Championship Alpine Combined.
On Monday, February 6th, USA’s Mikaela Shiffrin will compete to defend her 2021 World Championship Alpine Combined title. To date, Shiffrin has earned 11 career Alpine World Championship podiums. This season she is the only skier in the World who has won a super-G and slalom World Cup. She will undoubtedly be the favorite
It is especially likely because, due to health issues causing restricted training, Slovakian Petra Vlhova has announced she will not race either the alpine combined or the super-G. Vlhova won silver in the combined in Cortina 2021. Swiss star Michelle Gisin the bronze medalist in Italy 2021 and the reigning Olympic Champion will be competing but continues to struggle to find her speed with an oversized boot she is using due to a foot issue. They were the only two competitors within a second of Shiffrin at the last alpine world championships; fourth place Elena Curtoni was over two seconds behind Shiffrin.
Olympic silver medalist Wendy Holdner and bronze medalist Federica Brignone will also compete. Undoubtedly, both women can win. However, speed specialist Brignone has competed in one slalom this season and the slalom specialist, Holdener, has competed in two super-Gs.
Notably, all 33 women in the field will be doing their best to be fast as possible and if Shiffrin stumbles, they will win.
The format for tomorrow’s alpine combined is the total of the times from one run of super-G and one run of slalom.
North American teams have entered six women. The Stifel US alpine team has three competing and independent Tricia Mangan. Additionally, Alpine Canada Alpin has entered two. Among the North Americans, only Shiffrin has competed in both World Cup super-Gs and slaloms this season.
