Italian World Cup skier Nadia Fanchini underwent a second surgery on her right arm at the Galeazzi Orthopedic Institute in Milan this week.

She initially fractured her right humerus in the downhill at Altenmarkt-Zauchensee in early January, and unforeseen complications required her to go under the knife once again to install new plates and screws. The operation was performed by Professor Riccardo Accetta (a specialist in traumatology and humerus fractures who is also a board member of the International Olympic Committee’s official magazine) and Professor Andrea Panzeri (member of the medical commission of the Italian Ski Federation).

“I decided to have surgery again because I had severe pain in the shoulder,” said Fanchini. “Unfortunately yet another surgery in my career, I shall arise as always and I will aim to get back on track as soon as possible since it is the Olympic year.”

During her career, Fanchini has repeatedly fallen victim to season-ending injuries. During the St. Moritz super-G in 2010, she was involved in a disastrous crash that caused anterior cruciate ligament and posterior cruciate injuries. In the following season, another fall while forerunning at Cortina d’Ampezzo caused an ACL tear in her left knee.

Doctors will evaluate her after the surgery to determine a more precise timeline for recovery.
