Nor-Am Cup: Canadians look strong in women’s SG and combined, men’s SG canceled

Competition at the 2009 Nor-Am Cup finals got under way today in Lake Placid, New York as Canadian Larisa Yurkiw won both the women’s super G and super combined.

Yurkiw won the super G by just less than a second ahead of teammates Marie-Michele Gagnon and Emilie Desforges in second and third, respectively.

“I skied well but more importantly I skied smart,” Yurkiw said. “I really felt like I needed to finish today. I went for it but I was in control and it was a very good day.”
 
The U.S. had a trio of their own nipping at the heels of the Canadian SG podium. Chelsea Marshall (4th), Kristen Cooper (5th) and Keely Kelleher (6th) gave chase with top-ten results. 

The double Nor-Am wins are Yurkiw’s first of the season. Following a personal record 2008 (seven podiums), the 21-year-old has slumped somewhat this year with only one podium before today’s heroics.

Yurkiw won the super combine almost two seconds ahead of Americans Kaylin Richardson and Chelsea Marshall in second and third, respectively. Megan McJames rode her eighth-place finish in the SG to a fourth-place finish in the super combined.

Just the second super combined of the Nor-Am season, the win vaulted Yurkiw into second place in the super combined standings and qualified her for a World Cup spot next season. “I actually didn’t even know that I still had a shot at it. It’s a huge added bonus,” said Yurkiw of the World Cup spot.

Gagnon currently leads the Nor-Am overall standings, 22 points ahead of American Julia Ford who finished the SG sixteenth.
 
The men’s super G scheduled for today was cancelled.
