NorAm: Canada's Prefontaine rolls on home snow

Canada’s Marie-Pier Préfontaine dominated the opening NorAm giant slalom Thursday in Mont Ste. Anne Quebec, winning by 1.3 seconds over American Leanne Smith.

    Préfontaine had the fastest time in both runs, finishing with a winning time of 2 minutes 5.07 seconds. Smith, a U.S. Ski Teamer and Ski Racing Junior of the Year, posted 2:06.40.
    “It was really good. I was really happy with both runs today,” said Préfontaine, who finished second in a NorAm GS at Mont Ste. Anne in 2006. “I really felt like something good could happen, like I could do well and be on the podium today. It’s just you have to do it on race day and today I did it, I goy my first win.
    “I have been racing on this course since my first year of FIS five or six years ago. It’s a hill I really like and I know I can do well here.”
    Former U.S. Ski Team member Jenny Lathrop, who now is racing for the University of Denver, finished third in 2:06.75. Canada’s Emlie Desforges (2:06.80) and Kiley Staples of the U.S. Ski Team (2:06.98) rounded out the top five.
