Norwegian Jan Schmid won today’s (Mar. 3) nordic combined World Cup individual gundersen competition in Lahti, Finland; his second career victory and seventh podium result. Germany’s Tino Edelmann and Johannes Rydzek claimed the second and third spots on the podium.  France’s Jason Lamy Chappuis is still in the  lead with a 164-point advantage although hasn’t been able to claim the trophy just yet. Japan’s Akito Watabe remains in second place for the overall standings, 201 points ahead of Norwegian Mikko Kokslien.

“The beginning of the cross-country race was quite hard  for me because I started at the end of the group that ended up fighting for the victory.” said Schmid, “But I was able to save some energy  in the two laps in the middle. I felt really good, so I went for  it.”

After his career best fourth place finish last weekend, American Brian Fletcher showed another strong performance. Fletcher jumped to fourth then held on in the cross country race to finish seventh. It was his fourth top 10 of the season. Teammate Billy Demong took the week off but will return for the finale next week.

Due to difficult wind conditions,  no ski jumping was possible and Thursday’s (Mar. 1) provisional competition round results had to be used. The nordic combined World Cup  will go on with an individual gundersen and the final individual gundersen competition next weekend (Mar. 9-10) in Oslo, Norway.
