Origone, Dubouchet-Revol take gold at speed World Champs

Apr 28, 2011

They built – and flew into place – a start ramp at Verbier for the World Speed Skiing Championships. The site already held a speed mark of 219.280kph, or 136mph, so organizers and athletes were expectant. Mother Nature sapped that expectancy with a lack of snow, leaving the track just below the constructed ramp too rock strewn and dangerous for use.

With a lower start, the site record was safe, but  31 year old Simon Origone of Italy – the record holder – proved to be the fastest clocking in at 211.67 (131.5mph) to edge his little brother Ivan for the gold medal. He had won all three training runs and it was the ninth straight time Simon has finished first or second in World Cup or World Championship speed skiing competition. The gold was his fourth in a World Championship dating back to 2005. The man has it down pat.

The women’s gold medal went to 39 year old Frenchwoman Karin DuBouchet Revol ahead of a couple of Swedes, Linda Baginski in second and Sanna Tidstrand third.

About the Author: Hank McKee

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
