Paerson again tops downhill training in Are, Vonn third

For the second consecutive day, Swede Anja Paerson led the way down Are, Seweden’s Olympia downhill course today (Feb. 24) in a training run ahead of this weekend’s three World Cup races.

Paerson, along with most of the field, brought the speed up a little today, finishing the 2638-meter course nearly two seconds faster than she did yesterday. Just a hundredth of a second behind was recently crowned giant slalom world champ, Slovenia’s Tina Maze. American Lindsey Vonn was also close, just 0.05 seconds back in third. Vonn currently leads the downhill rankings with two wins and five podiums this season, she trails German Maria Riesch (disqualified today) in the overall rankings by 156 points. She has also won in Are twice.

Weather was much like yesterday with sunny, clear skies and cold temperatures in the low teens.

Vonn’s teammate Stacey Cook finished fourth, 0.33 seconds adrift while Julia Mancuso was 1.67 seconds back in 13th.

Competition begins tomorrow with a super combined. The downhill is scheduled for Saturday Feb. 26, followed by a super G Sunday Feb. 27.
