Paerson leads first downhill training in Sestriere

Jan 27, 2011

Sweden’s Anja Paerson led the way as women’s downhill training began today (Jan. 27) in Sestriere, Italy ahead of Saturday’s World Cup race.

Paerson showed that she is already comfortable on the Kandahar Banchetta course, finishing more than a second (1.05) faster than her nearest rival, Slovenia’s Tina Maze who crossed the line with a time of one minute, 42.49 seconds.

Downhill rankings leader, American Lindsey Vonn was 1.28 seconds behind Paerson with the day’s third-fastest time followed by France’s Marie Marchand-Arvier who was 1.39 seconds off the leading pace. Vonn, who strained her left knee in last weekend’s downhill, took some time off before today’s run and told reporters that the knee is feeling better.

“I had a couple days off and it was much needed,” Vonn told Fisapline.com. “I really liked it. The snow is really buff. The speeds weren’t that high but it was nice. Nice, loopy turns. The whole thing was really fun. The jumps were pretty big but the landings were nice. It was really smooth.”

Vonn won a World Cup downhill here in 2008.

World Cup overall leader and winner of the last downhill in Cortina, Germany’s  Maria Riesch finished tenth today, 2.03 seconds adrift.

American Leanne Smith, who recorded a career high last week with an eighth-place finish in a Cortina super G, continued to look fast in 14th today, a day after being named to the U.S. World Championships Team headed to Garmisch, Germany in less than two weeks. Teammates Julia Mancuso, Stacey Cook, Chelsea Marshall and Laurenne Ross, all headed to Garmisch as well, finished 26th, 28th, 32nd and 35th, respectively.

Britt Janyk led the Canadian women in 30th today. Teammates Marie-Michele Gagnon and Victoria Stevens followed in 30th and 46th, respectively.

A second training run is scheduled or tomorrow. Racing in Sestriere begins Friday, Jan. 29 with the downhill. A super combined is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 20.
