The Stifel U.S. Alpine Ski Team is bringing back a familiar leader to oversee the men’s alpine program.
U.S. Ski & Snowboard announced Wednesday that Phil McNichol has officially been named the men’s alpine head coach, effective immediately. McNichol returns to the American program after previously serving as head coach during one of the most successful periods in the history of the U.S. men’s World Cup team.
According to information released by U.S. Ski & Snowboard, McNichol led the Stifel U.S. Ski Team men from 2002-08, a stretch during which seven different athletes reached the World Cup podium. In addition, U.S. Ski & Snowboard noted that the men’s team finished second in the Nations Cup standings twice during his tenure.
McNichol returns to the U.S. program after serving as alpine director for Alpine Canada from 2019-23, where he worked with both the men’s and women’s teams.
McNichol returns to a familiar role
Stifel U.S. Ski Team Alpine Director Sasha Rearick said McNichol’s leadership and experience made him a strong fit to guide the men’s program moving forward.
“I’m extremely excited to welcome Phil’s leadership back to the men’s team,” Rearick said in a statement released by U.S. Ski & Snowboard. “He’s a true team builder who creates an environment where athletes and staff can grow both individually and together as a high-performing group. Phil brings a genuine care for people, great energy and a lot of fun to the daily process of getting better.”
Meanwhile, U.S. Ski & Snowboard described McNichol as being known throughout the alpine skiing community for an athlete-centered leadership style focused on trust, collaboration, accountability and strong relationships.
Because of his previous experience with the American team and his recent leadership role with Alpine Canada, McNichol returns with extensive international coaching experience across multiple World Cup cycles.
Focus shifts toward the future
McNichol said he is looking forward to helping continue the momentum within the Stifel U.S. Ski Team program.
“I’m genuinely honored to return to the Stifel U.S. Ski Team and support these athletes in their pursuit of excellence and world-class performance,” McNichol said in the U.S. Ski & Snowboard release. “U.S. Ski & Snowboard has built tremendous momentum, and I’m excited to help contribute to the next chapter by creating an environment where athletes and staff can thrive and perform at their best.”
As men’s alpine head coach, McNichol will work with coaches, athletes and support staff across the Stifel U.S. Ski Team program. According to U.S. Ski & Snowboard, his role will focus on continuing to strengthen the American men’s alpine program while pursuing long-term success on the World Cup circuit and beyond.
