Results from around the European nationals

Mar 27, 2009

The yanks aren’t the only ski racers facing off against their countrymen for nation bragging rights following the end of the World Cup season.  Across the pond Europe’s best have been going at it for over a week.

Hannes Riechelt took the Austrian National super G championship over Klaus Kroell with the women’s title going to Nicole Schmidhofer ahead of Stefanie Koehle. Kathrin Zettel took both the GS and slalom titles, besting Alexandra Daum for the slalom win and Ramona Siebenhofer for the GS. Riechelt won the men’s GS and Manfred Pranger the slalom is a race that saw a third of the field exit in the first run.

In the Italian nationals Daniela Merighetti and Stefan Thanei got the downhills wins, Thanei narrowly ahead of Peter Fill. It was nice to see 39-year-old Kristian Ghedina’s name lighting it up again in sixth place. Dominik Paris joined Merighetti in winning the super G titles.

German downhill titles went to Lena Duerr and Felix Neureuther.

The French are among the few countries to have completed their championships. The men’s downhill podium was Yannick Bertrand ahead of Patrick Staudacher and Adrien Theaux. Alexis Pinturault got the combined. And Theaux won the super G. Thomas Fanara edged Thomas Mermillod for the GS win and Jean-Baptiste Grange won the slalom by six tenths over Julien Lizeroux. Aurelie Revillet got the women’s French downhill crown ahead of Marion Pellissier and Ingrid Jacquemod. Pellissier got the combined win and Olivia Bertrand the super G.

Eian Sandvik is Norway’s men’s downhill champ, followed by Daniel Ericsson. Thea Grosvold took the women’s downhill title followed by Kristina Riis-Johannessen. Lars Elton Myhre and Lotte Smiseth Sejersted became the super combined champions, while Axel Baeck and Mona Loeseth climed the slalom titles.
