Rolland fastest in season’s first women’s downhill training run in Lake Louise, Mancuso second

The women’s World Cup speed season kicked of today (Nov. 30) in Lake Louise, Canada with the first downhill training run before races Friday and Saturday.

France’s Marion Rolland grabbed the day’s fastest time (1:31.70) down the 2441-meter, 33-gate course. She has recorded six career World Cup downhill top-ten results but never a podium. 

American Julia Mancuso had the second fastest time of 1:32.04, 0.34 off the leading pace. Mancuso has stood on eight World Cup downhill podiums including two victories but not since, the last of which coming in 2008 in Whistler, B.C. Her best finish in a Lake Louise downhill cam in 2005 when she finished fourth.

In the third position was Andrea Fischbacher who led a group of three Austrians that took the remaining top-five positions.   

Fellow American Lindsey Vonn, seven-time World Cup downhill winner in Lake Louise, comes into Alberta in search of her first top-five finish of the season through four gate races. She has two more training days to find the speed, she finished seventh today.

“Sometimes athletes have places where they feel at home and I definitely love Lake Louise,” Vonn told Universal Sports. “It’s a great a great place for me, it suits my strength. It’s a place where I have a lot of confidence. I feel like I could go up there and not even inspect the course and I would be able to ski okay.”

Current World Cup overall leader, German Maria Riesch had the day’s 13th-fastest time.

On their home turf, the Canadian women’s team had only one top-30 finisher in Britt Janyk who finished 20th, followed by teammate Georgia Simmerlng in 34th.

There are two more downhill training runs scheduled for tomorrow and Thursday. There will be two World Cup downhill races Friday and Saterday (Nov. 3 and 4) and a super G on Sunday (Nov. 5).
