Brennan Rubie crowned national combined champion on tough opening day

On the opening day of U.S. Alpine Championships in Sun Valley, Idaho, U.S. Ski Teamer Brennan Rubie bested the field on a challenging day to take the alpine combined title with a total time of 2:01.76 seconds. Second place went to Alaska native Kieffer Christianson, 1.46 seconds back as fellow national team member Hig Roberts managed to round out the podium in third, 2.24 seconds off the pace. Fastest junior on the day went to Youth Olympic Games gold medalist River Radamus, 2.88 seconds back.

The morning started with a 30-minute delay and the tough super G track proved to be quite the challenge for the 59-man field. Due to the steepness of the Greyhawk venue, the course needed to be set quite tight for a super G and saw 19 racers fail to finish their runs, with many others running into trouble and finding themselves way off the pace heading into the slalom portion of the event.

After the morning’s run was complete, Great Britain’s Jack Gower set the time to beat from bib 24, 0.23 seconds ahead of Rubie in second. However, Gower elected to not participate in the afternoon’s slalom, leaving Rubie as the man to beat in the slalom run.

Despite a valiant effort by Roberts, who won the slalom run and jumped up nine places in the standings, Rubie managed to hold on to his advantage from the super G and took the win. Christianson faltered a bit during the slalom  but was just fast enough to slide in front of Roberts for runner-up honors.

Racing action continues tomorrow with the women’s alpine combined.
