Schoerghofer takes first career World Cup in Hinterstoder GS

Feb 06, 2011

Austrian Philipp Schoerghofer grabbed his first career World Cup win today (Feb. 6), taking a giant slalom on home snow in Hinterstoder, Austria by 0.17 seconds.

Schoerghofer earned the win by staying consistent through both runs. In the No. 8 bib, he took the second-fastest, first-run time then held on for the win as the second to last man down a chewed up course with a combined time of two minutes, 46.44 seconds.

First run leader, Norway’s Kjetil Jansrud finished second, only three hundredths of a second ahead of Swiss Carlo Janka in third.

It proved to be a tight race as the top 10 men were all within 0.67 seconds.

American Bode Miller, tied for 28th after he first run, had a fresh course for round 2 and cruised to the fastest second-run time (1:23.60), climbing to the ninth spot on the day to lead four U.S men into the points.

“That was inspiring skiing,” said U.S. head coach Sasha Rearick of Miller’s performance. “It was fun to see Bode on a turny course like that just chuck himself down the hill and ski aggressive. Bode is finding his gear and putting in the type of inspiring skiing which is fun for us to watch and for him to throw down. We’re looking forward to going to World Champs.”

Fellow American Ted Ligety, who won three consecutive World Cup GS races in December, finished 13th. Tommy Ford, who set a career high with an 11th-place result in yesterday’s super G, finished 18th while Warner Nickerson saw his second career World Cup scoring result in 26th.

Nolan Kasper, Tommy Biesemeyer and Tim Jitloff all failed to finish the first run to join a list of 15 total first run exits.

“Ted didn’t have the day he wanted by any means. He skied the top on the first run fantastic. The second run he wasn’t putting down the hill like he can,” said Rearick.”It was a great day for Tommy Ford with his first time in the GS points this year and Warner Nickerson also did a great job making the cut for the second time this season.”

Yesterday’s super G winner, Austrian Hanned Reichelt just missed the podium today in fourth place, 0.21 seconds off the pace.

Competition now shifts to Garmisch, Germany for the 2011 FIS World Championships.
