Snowboarding and skateboarding icon Shaun White was arrested for public intoxication and vandalism in Nashville, Tenn. early Sunday morning (Sep. 16) after causing damage at a hotel and reportedly being involved in an altercation with a hotel guest.
According to reports, the two-time Olympic gold medalist drunkenly destroying a phone at the hotel and was later treated at a hospital for a head injury. According to a police statement, White (26) “appeared to be extremely intoxicated and smelled strongly of alcohol.”
ESPN.com reports that officers were called to the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel at 2 a.m. Sunday after a man fitting White’s description triggered a fire alarm, forcing the hotel to evacuate all guests.
White attempted to flee the scene in a taxi but was stopped by a guest who informed the driver that police were on the way. Police reported that White, a 24-time X Games medalist, then kicked at the man and took off running before falling and hitting his head on a fence.
According to police, White refused to sign misdemeanor citations. “He basically put himself in jail by not signing that,” a police source told ESPN.com.
White was arrested on Monday after being released from the hospital. He has a court date set for Oct. 10.
