Gary Black’s first skis were cut-down 10th Mountain Division castoffs used on a hill outside of Baltimore, Maryland. His ski career progressed to Stowe, Vermont, where he learned that one could turn on skis. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Black spent his early career at the Baltimore Sun. In 1984, he purchased Ski Racing, selling it 18 years and countless events, Olympics and World Championships later to Inside Communications Inc in Boulder, Colorado. After three years, Black reacquired the magazine with three partners, all of whom share a dedication to ski sport. A member of the U. S. Ski Team Foundation board and the FIS World Cup and media committees, he is chairman and chief executive of the new company, Ski Racing International LLC. Publisher Amanda Rising Black brings more than 15 years of industry experience to Ski Racing. A graduate of Holderness School and the University of Vermont, Amanda has spent more of her life on skis than off. Amanda first began working with the publication at age 16 in a variety of positions and eventually became ad director in 1995. She left the publication in 2002 after the sale to Inside Communications. She returns to Ski Racing from Clear Channel Communications, where she was the sales and marketing coordinator for a six-station radio cluster. Amanda is an avid outdoor enthusiast and enjoys skiing, hiking, fishing and traveling. Reach Amanda via e-mail at ablack@skiracing.com

Account Executive Nancy Merrill brings both personal and professional passion to her position with Ski Racing. Nancy is a long-time resident of Salt Lake City, a mother of three avid skiers, as well as a Rowmark Academy ski racing mom. Nancy spent her formative years growing up and skiing in New England, graduating from Denison University in 1988 with a bacehlor’s degree in English. When she isn’t at Ski Racing, Nancy spends her free time with family, hiking, running, and traveling to ski races. You can reach Nancy at nmerrill@skiracing.com

Sales and marketing coordinator Amy Doxey grew up in Denver, Colorado where she remembers opening her front door only to be stopped by a wall of snow. She learned to ski thanks to the several skiing resorts nearby, spending most of her time at Keystone and Vail. She graduated in 2007 from Brigham Young University-Hawaii, where she studied International Studies concentrating in Communications. Amy loves to alpine ski, swim, write, travel and cook. Editorial

A member of the US Freestyle Ski Team from 1991 through 2000, Editor-in-chief Lara Rosenbaum brings her firsthand knowledge and love of snow-sport competition to the Ski Racing team, along with a breadth of experience in the magazine publishing field. A seasoned freelance writer, Rosenbaum’s work has appeared in national magazines like Men’s Health, Glamour, SELF, and Fitness among others, and she has written regular online columns for Women’s Health and custom Web sites like Saturn cars. Prior to joining Ski Racing, Rosenbaum served as an editor at Allure and Organic Style magazines, and most recently as a senior editor at Women’s Health magazine, in New York, where she was one of the original editors who helped successfully launch and brand the publication. Rosenbaum holds a BA in English from Middlebury College, and enjoyes reading, horseback, yoga and anything in or on the ocean during her free time.

Senior editor Hank McKee hails from Duxbury, Vermont, a town, he says, with more dogs on the census than people. McKee grew up in western New York, where he also started his journalistic career with the local newspaper, the Evening Observer. He moved in 1977 to Vermont, working first with the Eastern Ski Association and, since 1980, with Ski Racing, serving in a variety of capacities. In his years with the publication, he also has worked assignments with NBC, ESPN, Turner Broadcasting System, the Outdoor Life Network and the Salt Lake City Olympic Organizing Committee, generally, as he puts it, “feeding information to the talking heads.” He and his wife, Mame, are “empty nesters.” He enjoys playing his own brand of golf at the Saint Divots Golf and Sledding Club course at his home in Duxbury. He occasionally still sings with his high school rock band The Wretched Group and has recently undertaken barbecue competitions as a member of the Howling Hogs Barbeque Team. McKee maintains the Ski Racing database, tracking thousands of skiers each season. “The sport of ski racing has been good to me,” he says. “I’ve seen and skied places I would never have been able to go on my own. I hope I can continue to give back to the sport for many more seasons.” Reach Hank via e-mail at hmckee@skiracing.com

Art

Art director Rand Paul has years of experience working for advertising agencies, universities and private businesses and joined Ski Racing as art director this summer. A graduate of the Colorado Art Institute, Rand’s work has been seen on billboards as far away as Malaysia. While grinding away at his day job, Rand also has managed to squeeze in 12 years of playing with a regional roots rock band, which goes a long way in explaining his eccentric behavior. In his spare time, Rand enjoys sitting in with friends playing local clubs, skiing the Colorado high country and doing freelance illustrations, portraits and music posters.
