Sofia Goggia has been announced as the new ambassador of the 2021 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Cortina, Italy. The Italian Olympic Champion from Bergamo has always been a staunch lover of Cortina, an area known as the Queen of the Dolomites, and this deal is the result of a relationship that has constantly evolved in recent years. The Olympia delle Tofane track is a key element of this relationship. The famous slope of the Women’s FIS Alpine Ski World Cup will be the protagonist in the World Championships 2021.

On that very slope, Goggia finished second twice in 2017 and in January 2018, she won one of the two downhill races in a historic duel with her friend and rival Lindsey Vonn. That victory in Cortina paved the way to the Olympic gold medal that she won just a few days later in PyeongChang, South Korea.

Goggia is now ready to fully live the experience of the World Championships in Cortina and the town itself, becoming its Ambassador to the world. The image of the World Championships, its values, and everything that makes Cortina unique have found a special athlete, who joins the local champion Kristian Ghedina as an official ambassador of the event.

“It’s a great honor to become an ambassador for Cortina 2021,” said Goggia. “Olympia delle Tofane has always been my favorite slope. Here I achieved great results in the past seasons. Cortina offers a unique atmosphere: when you take the ski lifts, you are surprised by the beauty of the area. From a technical point of view, in my opinion, it’s the most beautiful stage of the World Cup season, because both the training slopes and the racing slopes are in perfect condition, and the needs of the athletes come first. I thank Fondazione Cortina for this great opportunity. I’ll work hard to be in good shape for the World Championships. Cortina will always have a special place in my heart. It was in Cortina that I got my first red leader bib ahead of Lindsey Vonn two years ago, it was in Cortina that I took my first picture with the U.S. champion, and it was always in Cortina that – even if I’d just come back from an injury – I paid homage to her last year, when she announced her retirement from ski racing.”

“It’s a real pleasure to have Sofia Goggia as ambassador of the next FIS Alpine World Ski Championships,” added Alessandro Benetton, President of Fondazione Cortina 2021. “Sofia is a world-class champion of the Italian team and a great web influencer, a person who is appreciated for her intelligence and humor. I’m sure that she will succeed in promoting our brand in Cortina and, above all, the World Championships 2021 in an innovative way throughout the world with a view to attract the curiosity of people towards a sports event that will draw attention to the area around Cortina and the Dolomites, which is also a UNESCO world heritage site.”

“Sofia Goggia has definitely become one of the spearheads of the Italian team in the last years,” said the President of FISI Flavio Roda. “And she’s a real celebrity thanks to her communication skills, her perfect knowledge of foreign languages, her kindness, but also thanks to the enthusiasm that she can awaken when she’s competing.”

The 2021 World Championships will take place in Cortina from February 9-21, 2021.
