Sofia Goggia has shared an update on the illness that forced her to return early from preseason training in Ushuaia, Argentina. Medical examinations found two separate viral infections that have left the Italian skier significantly weakened, according to the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI).

Goggia had been training in Ushuaia since Aug. 23. On Sept. 12, FISI announced that she would return to Italy after feeling unwell during the camp. She and the federation’s medical commission agreed that she should undergo further examinations.

Goggia underwent tests at La Madonnina Clinic and San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. In a follow-up notice, FISI clarified that virology specialists at the CeReMi center in Pavia also supported the evaluation. The federation said the combined effects of the two infections have had a substantial impact on her physical condition.

Goggia has begun a recovery program developed with FISI’s medical commission, chaired by Dr. Andrea Panzeri.

In an update on her Instagram account, Goggia said she was disappointed to lose part of her preparation but pleased with how her first week on skis in Argentina had gone. She thanked the doctors and specialists who have supported her since she returned home.

Goggia said she is improving but remains weak. Now that doctors have identified the cause of her symptoms, she said, recovery will require time and patience.

The interruption comes ahead of the 2026–27 World Cup season. Goggia won last season’s super-G title and took downhill bronze at the Milano Cortina Olympics.

Neither Goggia nor FISI has announced when she expects to resume training.
