A new battleground: The Stifel Sun Valley World Cup Finals super-G races on March 23 will demand power, courage, and split-second decision-making as the world’s fastest skiers take on the Challenger course—a venue built for the next generation of elite racing.

With only the top 25 in the season standings qualifying for the Finals, these races bring together the most dominant super-G skiers of the year. Unlike regular-season events, where larger fields stretch over a longer competition window, the Finals are short and intense. One by one, the best in the world will launch out of the start gate, attacking a slope where they’ve already raced downhill, but never in super-G.

A Super-G with Downhill DNA

At 1,829 meters (6,001 feet) in length with a 650-meter (2,132-foot) vertical drop, Sun Valley’s super-G features several of the same sections as the full downhill course, including the Frontier Jump, The Sluice, and Cowboy’s Corner—technical and high-speed zones that demand absolute focus. The course starts lower than the downhill, but the high-speed, rolling terrain is just as unforgiving.

The key challenge? Super-G has no training runs. Unlike downhill, where racers get at least one training run, super-G allows only a single inspection on race-day morning. That means competitors must trust their instincts and read the terrain at full speed while attacking from the moment they leave the start gate. Every turn, every jump, every transition must be executed with world-class timing—because in super-G, hesitation is the difference between victory and losing the podium.

Scoring Format at the World Cup Finals

The World Cup Finals feature a reduced field. Only the top 25 athletes from the season standings qualify for each event, along with skiers who have earned 500 World Cup points and meet FIS eligibility criteria. Unlike regular-season races, where the top 30 finishers earn World Cup points, only the top 15 receive points at the Finals.
