Aksel Lund Svindal, took the first training run of the World Cup season at Lake Louise Wednesday (Nov. 24) besting Austrian Hans Grugger to the finish by .07 of a second. Another .07 back was Swede Patrik Jaerbyn.

Bode Miller was the top American in seventh, a third of a second off Svindal’s pace. Robbie Dixon led the Canadians in 15th.

It was the first of three scheduled training runs on the Men’s Olympic Downhill track before the actual race is held Saturday (Nov. 27).

Svindal, a two time World Cup overall champion and triple Olympic medalist last season has twice won Cup super G’s at Lake Louise, but has never claimed the downhill. This season’s super G will be held Sunday (Nov. 28).

Grugger, who turns 30 next month, scored in seven Cup downhills last season. Jaerbyn, at 42 the oldest racer on the circuit has three podiums and no wins in a 19 year World Cup career.

The Americans had four finishers in the top 30: Miller seventh, Travis Ganong 26th, Steven Nyman 27th and the last starter, Tommy Ford in 29th. Beyond Dixon Canada had Erik Guay in 21st with Manuel Osborne-Paradis – a SG winner at the site last season – in 37th. -hm
