SYNC Performance Elite Cut Resistant Base Layer: What Racers Need to Know This Season
Cut protection is now part of the kit for every FIS racer, and there are a lot of questions going around about what counts and what to buy. SYNC Performance put together a quick rundown, along with the launch of its new Elite Cut Resistant Base Layer, rated 3 stars under the FIS-DITF 2021 standard and available in adult and junior sizes.
What’s changing this season?
Starting with the 2026/27 season, FIS requires cut-resistant pants at all FIS Alpine races, from World Cup and NorAm down to university and Masters events. Last season the rule applied only to Level 0 and 1 events such as the World Cup and Continental Cups. If you’re racing FIS this winter, you need it.
Why does it matter?
Ski edges are sharper than ever, and in a crash they can cause serious cuts, especially to the legs. Cut-resistant fabric is built to stop or slow an edge before it reaches the skin.
What makes a base layer FIS-legal?
- It’s rated at least 3 stars under the FIS-DITF 2021 standard, an independent lab test of how well the fabric holds up to a blade.
- It covers from the hip down to the top of the boot, which is why most cut-resistant base layers are 3/4 length.
- It has an official FIS label on it. Look for the label and the star rating, not just the words “cut-resistant.”
Do junior racers need one?
Cut-resistant base layers aren’t mandatory for most junior racing yet, but they’re a good idea:
- The risk from a sharp edge is the same at any age.
- Young racers crash a lot (that’s how they learn), so the extra protection goes a long way.
- Kids who move up to FIS racing will need it anyway, and wearing it early makes it feel normal.
- A good one feels like a warm base layer under the speed suit, so there’s no real downside.
What is the SYNC Elite Cut Resistant Base Layer?
It’s SYNC’s most protective base layer yet, FIS 3-star certified in every size and a full star higher than SYNC’s previous cut-resistant base layer. It covers racers from hip to boot in a breathable stretch knit with seamless construction, and it moves like a warm base layer, not armor. Every pair carries the FIS 3-star label on the leg.
“Protection is the most important thing an athlete can wear, but it only works if they actually want to put it on. The Elite gives racers 3-star cut protection with the mobility and breathability they need to ski their best, and it feels like any other warm base layer,” said Alex Leever, CEO of SYNC Performance. “Every racer in a FIS start gate has to wear cut protection now, and we want that protection to be the best available at every age. That’s why we’re offering a junior version alongside the adult model.”
What sizes and prices are available?
- Elite Adult Cut Resistant Base Layer: $399, unisex sizes S–XL
- Elite Junior Cut Resistant Base Layer: $349, youth sizes 10/12 and 12/14, with the same fabric and 3-star protection as the adult model
Where can I get one?
Both models are available now at SYNC Performance.
