Tilley takes back-to-back GS wins in final Panorama NorAms

Great Britain’s Alexandra Tilley continued her successful NorAm series with back-to-back victories and 6-point results in giant slalom on the final two days of racing in Panorama. Tilley’s two GS wins made it three out of four victories in the NorAm technical events with a win in one of the slaloms held earlier in the week.

In the first GS (held on Thursday), Tilley moved up from third after run one to take the win. First run leader Candace Crawford of the Canadian development team finished runner-up, 0.26 seconds behind Tilley and also took top junior honors on the day. Crawford’s second-place finish was her fourth podium result of the week after a win and second-place finishes in the two slaloms and an additional victory in the combined.

Croatian U18 Leona Popovic rounded out the podium in third, 0.98 seconds off the winning pace. Megan McJames was the top American, finishing eighth, and U18 NTG team members Nina O’Brien and Galena Wardle had impressive showings, moving from 37th to 11th and 85th to 14th, respectively.

Day two of GS saw familiar names on the podium as Tilley collected her second victory in as many races to continue her hot streak. Canadian national team junior Mikaela Tommy finished 0.18 seconds behind Tilley in second and was joined on the podium by teammate Valerie Grenier, 0.38 seconds back, in third. Both Canadian athletes each won a super G NorAm earlier in the week.

O’Brien added to her strong result from Thursday with a sixth place finish, for the best NorAm placing of her career, and also earned the honor of top American on the day.

Crawford, who finished no worse than fifth in all the NorAm races held in Panorama, continues to lead the overall standings, 541 to 427 for runner-up Tilley. Tommy sits in third with 402 points.

Win her two wins, Tilley takes the lead in the GS standings over Ana Drev (did not race), 213 points to 180. Crawford, with her fifth-place finish in the final GS, is currently third with 147 points.

NorAm racing now takes a long hiatus until slalom competition resumes Feb. 17, 2015 at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary.

A 10-year veteran of the U.S. Ski Team, Kelley collected three NorAm titles, won GS silver at the 2002 World Junior Championships, and was a member of the 2007 World Championships team during her professional career. She resides in Park City, Utah, with her husband, Adam Cole.
