The December 16th World Cup Super-G will represent Val Gardena-Gröden’s 100th World Cup. Hopefully, we will see an Italian on the podium and make the crowd wild. Undoubtedly, expect the Italians to be celebrating.

The racers will start from the same position on the hill as they did in today’s shortened downhill. However, there will be more turns meaning their legs will be additionally fatigued.

So far this season, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde and Marco Odermatt have owned super-G. After today’s shortened downhill, expect Kilde to exact revenge and Odermatt to ski with additional confidence.

There is no doubt that these are the two best speed skiers on the planet, and both can win any race they enter. However, we have seen that the greats can be beaten by the merely incredible.

Traditionally the SG avoids the camel jump, so there will be less time in the air, but not much. This hill tests all their terrain skills. It is impossible to change direction in the air, so when skiers become airborne, they must travel in the right direction.

Tomorrow will see 14 North American men racing. The Canadians will start eight athletes, and the USA will start six. The top three North American Super-G skiers in this season’s standings are all Canadians. James Crawford is 8th, Jeffrey Read is 20th, and Brodie Seger is 21. USA’s River Radamus is ranked 25th but will not be competing.

One other American, Kyle Negomir, and three Canadians have scored points in the two super-Gs held this season in Lake Louise and Beaver Creek. Trevor Philp, Riley Seger, and Broderick Thompson all have 2022-23 World Cup Super-G points.

Unfortunately, this season the US’s silver medalist in Super-G, Ryan Cochran-Siegle, has yet to finish his specialty. Still, he is usually fast when he does get to the bottom. Tomorrow would be a great day to turn his Super-G season in a better direction.

The US squad had a good day today, with five athletes scoring, so there is good reason to hope for an exciting performance tomorrow.
