Ty Sprock, a Sugar Bowl racer out of Stateline, Nev., claimed the J2 National GS title in the Marriot J2 Junior Championships at Mammoth Mountain Sunday (March 11).
Sprock won both runs for a comfortable margin of more than a second and a half over Jeremy Epstein, of New Castle and skiing out of the Waterville Valley BBTS program. Taking the bronze medal, just .05 from silver, was Nicolas Veth from Arroyo Seco, NM and the Steamboat Springs WSC. Veth captured the super G gold medal earlier in the week.
Alex Leever, of Vail, Colo., and S&SC of Vail just missed a second J2 medal in fourth. He earned a bronze medal in slalom to opening the title meet. Slalom champion, Erik Arvidsson of Woodside, Calif., and the Squaw Valley program was fifth.
Nick Santaniello, Edwards, Colo., and the Vail program, came from the 31st start position to win sixth, his best showing of the meet. Seventh went to Garret Driller of Tahoe City, Calif., and the Squaw Valley Ski Team.

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
